Oh My!

The MashUp

US President Barack Obama's choice of a Portuguese water dog has triggered a surge of interest in the pedigree in Britain. Britain's Kennel Club said it had seen a 125 percent increase in enquiries about the hypoallergenic breed. "We frequently see the popularity of certain breeds soar once people have seen them being bought by their favourite celebrities," said club spokeswoman Caroline Kisko. "But dogs are not a fad or a new accessory that can be disposed of at will -- they are a lifetime commitment. Sadly, there are already reports of Portugese water dogs being abandoned and captured by pounds. What is there to do for these dogs? Miuccia Prada’s new fall collection may provide an answer. Boss designer Ms. Prada's fall collection includes fur tippets tied loosely at the neck. ''We feel there's a major opportunity in fur -- fur handbags, fur berets, fur-trimmed shoes and boots, and fur neck pieces,'' said Sandra Wilson, the accessories fashion director at Neiman Marcus. ''It's part of a luxury statement in all fashion categories.'' And with the unstoppable Obama brand soaring all over the world, what is more chic this season than a fur piece made of Portugese water dog fur? First in line for the new line of Prada Portugese water dog fur coats is of course Madonna who topped PETA’s “Worst Dressed Celebrities of 2009" list. "When you see Madonna in fur, you realize nobody has copied her style since 1984," they say. "We realize she's on the prowl for a young cub, but someone needs to tell Madge that wearing fur doesn't make you a cougar." Despite PETA’s very angry stance on the subject, the style will be among the most prominent for fall.

Sources

Madonna article from Glamour magazine: www.glamour.com/fashion/blogs/slaves-to-fashion/2009/03/peta-names-madonna-worst-dress.html

Obama article from The Age: http://news.theage.com.au/breaking-news-world/obamas-dog-choice-makes-splash-in-britain-20090415-a6e2.html

Prada article from New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2000/05/16/style/it-s-not-just-something-in-the-air-that-s-miuccia-prada-s-influence.html?n=Top/Reference/Times%20Topics/People/P/Prada,%20Miuccia

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://wyzheng.blogspot.com/2009/05/mash-up-us-president-barack-obamas.html' title='Obama's dog to be made into a fur coat for Madonna by Prada? At the same time in accordance with his quote 'to protect' i made the ramp encircle his lab.

In reference to his marine life documentaries the lab itself was as fishbowl-like as possible so its like he's working in one of his documentaries. Also the floors and the walls mimic this effect as well as if you go into my model in unreal the floor flows in a wavelike fashion and the walls bubble like a typical fish tank.

There is orange light illuminating the lab from the interior to mimic a sunrise or a sunset on the open sea.

Also, notice that I have installed a crow's nest at the very top of his lab so that when he wants to remininesce about his life on the sea he can climb up there and look out to the horizon line.

Electroliquid Aggregation Link: The ramp in this lab sort of watches over the lab itself at the same time it provides the watcher to opportunity to dissect its attributes from every a single. Hence noting its similarities and differences.

Nobel Lab

My quote for Nobel is that 'all science is built on observations of similarities and differences'. So his lab was built entirely out of cylinders of different sizes, referencing both his idea and the fact that his most famous invention - dynamite traditionally comes in a cylindrical shape.

His side of the ramp being a maze that becomes more difficult to navigate as you walk closer to his lab references Nobel's shyness with people and his intellectual need for challenges. If you read his biography Nobel was a 19th century Renaissence man in that he ran a successful business that made him a billionare by age 40, invented a lot of things as side projects...etc. So it made sense (to me anyway) to have a maze installed on his ramp to stimulate him as he walks to the meeting place and as it becomes harder closer to his lab to keep away people as he was notoriously awkward with people.

The Ramp/Meeting Place

The top image is the view standing on the second level Nobel lab looking out at the ramp leading up and leading away from the meeting place.

The bottom image is the view standing at Cousteau's crow's nest looking down at the meeting place and the ramp leading up to it from the lab.

The meeting place is in the shape of a perfect circle so to denote that Nobel and Cousteau are meeting on an equal footing (sort of like the Arthurian Round Table) and the texture which looks like two halves straining to meeting is a sign of the spirit of cooperation in which they can have an intellectual exchange of ideas.

I kept the lighting simple as well so to keep the meeting place as neutral as possible.

Electroliquid Aggregation Link: To protect something you need to know as much about them as possible. Both images are from labs watching over a link. Because when something enchants you that much...wouldnt you want to know as much as possible about it?

Fillers

For your viewing pleasure, here are some more fillers.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331897029500411154" style="DISPLAY: block; Jacques-Yves Cousteau's lab epitomises his idea of 'protect what you love' and design-wise, it looks very similar to the artist's dwelling in her building fully occupied by conventional (or with schizophrenic, unconventional) monsters. Her concept drawings for her dwelling show a wall of jagged pillars thrusting out as if to defend herself from the other occupants of her building. And in the end her final design shows a structure that curls in on itself as if to protect its occupant from the outside world.

At the same time there is a large opening facing the sun at sunrise (from her perspective) from her notion of camera obscura. My design has glass walls to open what is protected to the outside world so that the world can share in its beauty.

the axiometric design which acted as inpiration

the outside view

the view from the second floor

Electroliquid Aggregation

1st quote: Nobel wrote that "all science is built on observations of similarities and differences."

2nd quote: "One protects what one likes.", Cousteau repeated, "and one likes what enchanted us."

Electroliquid Aggregation: One protects all sciences which enchanted us building on the observation of similarities and differences.

and dolly says to the dynamite 'so, ever seen 18 axiometric drawings in a row?' He continued:

"A chemical analysis is of course nothing other than this, and even mathematics has no other foundation. History is a picture of past similarities and differences; geography shows the differences in the earth's surface; geology, similarities and differences in the earth's formation, from which we deduce the course of its transformations. Astronomy is the study of similarities and differences between celestial bodies; physics, a study of similarities and differences that arise from the attraction and motive functions of matter. The only exception to this rule is religious doctrine, but even this rests on the similar gullibility of most people. Even metaphysics - if it is not too insane - must find support for its hypotheses in some kind of analogy. One can state, without exaggeration, that the observation of and the search for similarities and differences are the basis of all human knowledge."

source: http://nobelprize.org/alfred_nobel/biographical/articles/frangsmyr/index.html used:

This I used on the the below ground studio because the word for the underground portion was 'desperate' and so the underground part tries to convey this sense of urgency in getting out of the ground and blooming - very organic. As the word this texture is supposed to convey is organic, this is especially appropriate.

This is the texture in used on the stairs connecting the gallery level to the studio above. The word is 'rigid' and to my point of view, stairs have to be rigid or else its not functional. Also, the word for the above ground studio is 'artifice' and rigidity does come to mind with it, hence the appropriate-ness.

Finally, the third texture. The word here is 'jagged' which is strangely appropriate when you consider that its used for the railing around the connecting staircase on the aboveground studio. In that studio half the ceiling is glass as is most of the shelves and railings in the studio. This texture conveys this sense of moving up and through which is one of the side effects of artifice.

Russell had surprised everyone quite horribly when he told us that we had to have balustrades on our stairs - especially so given what he said in the first lecture. But as my tutor told me, I got 'creative' and constructed balustrades. Here are the sketches:

I'd only constructed balustrades for stairs that do need them. I have six flights of stairs (which does sound somewhat excessive) but only two sets of balustrades for a very good reason. The rest has built in balustrades from the surrounding structure anyway. When you watch my 'round and up' video you can tell that not only does having balustrades would kill the flow of my below ground studio, the stairs there are also too low and wide for anyone to require balustrades.

Same for the above ground studio set of stairs that don't have balustrades. Its carved into the wall so the surround structure acts as balustrades! (this also can be witness in my videos 'up, up and away!' would be the best example)

Sketch basis for my model:

the words are 'artifice' above and 'desperate' below.

Photos of my model:

An overview from the front entrace.

Fiona Hall's studio - the very modern almost pop decor is following the word 'artifice' and that a lot of her work is taking the image of something natural and making it artificial.

Tracy Moffat's studio - from her interview and her other works she wants her paintings to have a sensual quality and what is more sensual that organically rising up from below ground desperately reaching for light?

The animations:

This one is an overview of my model if someone were to walk through it from the below ground studio all the way up following the stairs and out onto the balcony on the above ground studio.

I've emphasised in the previous weeks and above that my below ground studio is very organic so in the video above I've demonstrated the flow of the building from when you go up the first flight of stairs to the large concentric circular stairs and then leave for the gallery via the cantilever stairs going up.

Every week my tutor asks me 'what is the connection between your above ground and your below ground?' Well, here is it. The video is fairly self explanatory but its basically what you see what you come up from the gallery level and continue on to the balcony in the above ground studio and then looking up from the below ground studio.

NOTE: I accidentally switched the paintings of the artists when I was installing them in their studios. "Invocations" is a febrile set of fantasy images. They were created using elaborate sets in a New York studio, then spending months manipulating the photographs to achieve "painterly" effects right down to "cracks" on the surface. In an interview, Moffat describes the process of creating 'Invocations': "The pictures were made in a big studio in New York. I created the tableaux. I had people build the theatrical sets for me and then I made the photographs. Then I wanted to go beyond the photograph in presenting the images so that the work became more painterly. I actually couldn't stop thinking about the old silk screen process. I don't think anyone knows how to do it any more. We all learned it as kids in school but no one's really employing it any more. Anyway, I found this printer in New Jersey - he had a huge old-fashioned set-up. He's a commercial printer, and he said he would do the job. Years ago he had worked for artists but there was no money in it, so he gave it up, and he now prints for Toys R Us. So, I come to him with this art project and he's delighted to be back into the art world; but we took nine months to make the work and print it. It's all by hand, colour after colour, screen after screen, so the pictures have this sort of built up feel: like a pastel, a watercolour. And it's very physical. I wanted the physicality of paint on paper. I wanted it to be sensual."

note: this is more than 120 words and I couldnt get Fiona Hall's process because I can't find the title of her work that I used. I found it on this blog: thejunefox.blogspot.com and she never replied when I contacted her asking for the name of the work she has on her blog.

where sections morph into 3D

Below are my 18 sections based on the words 'artifice, wilting, vivid, tragedy, yearning, desperate.' and if you're wandering why the paper looks different from others in some scans is because I scanned most of it in grayscale and didn't notice when it reverted to colour...

In lecture 2 we're told to drawn the sections of one of the stairs. I was going to post this piece of creative writing that I wrote when I was in year 9 but after comparison, it was less creative than the piece I will post below.

This is my year 11 2U Prelim essay and despite it being an essay, it's more 'creative' (i.e. I bullshited my way through english) than the short story I was going to post.

...

The Human Condition is determined by what comes from within an individual more than from external forces.

The human condition of the protagonists in the play “the Glass Menagerie”, the comic “The Sandman: Season of Mists” and the poem “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” proposes similar points of view regarding the opinion that the human condition is determined by internal forces rather than external forces.

Season of Mists revolve around Dream and his quest for redemption. However, the character of Dream is an amalgam of what the human imagination expects him to be. However, this expectation of what he is supposed to be is not an external force. Its is the essence of what Dream is, and as a result, his only internal force. The events of the comic all resulted due to outside forces. For example, the catalyst of the events in the comic are the Three who appear to Destiny to set the sequence of events into motion. However, Dream’s reactions to the events are what the human imagination expects Morpheus, the lord of Dreams to act like. So despite the fact that the comic was actually driven by external forces, the human condition of Dream is still driven by the internal force of all who believe in him, the basic foundation block of his power, and in turn, his human condition.

Prufrock from the “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” however, is someone who is trying to change his external forces by trying to motivate forces within himself. He was obviously a very passionate man as can be seen from at the beginning of the poem from his allusions to issues he’d wanted to change in society to the changes he wanted to make in his personal life. But his passionate beliefs are all the second handed knowledge of a man who was willing to settle into his niche and let the world pass him by. Though external forces such as society’s scrutiny and the dreary English weather seemed to be the foundation block of Prufrock’s human condition, the real forces that motivates or discourages him comes from within. To Prufrock, though society’s scrutiny and disdain may terrify him, what really caused him to fail in his quest to change society and the world is Prufrock’s own insecurities. So in the end, though Prufrock spent most of the poem agonizing over society’s reaction over his possible action, the only force responsible for his retreat into old age is his internal forces.

Tom in “the Glass Menagerie” knows what he wants. And he knows how to get it. In Tom’s case, his goals are denied him due to external influences consisting of his mother, sister and absent father. Laura and Amanda together shaped Tom into someone who puts filial obedience at the foreground of his life. Though this is done unintentionally on Laura’s part her shyness and social inadequacies instills in Tom the urge to protect her. Amanda living in her dreamy land of the past had also shaped Tom in his need to escape into some reality not his own. Their father, the phantom whose shadow hangs over all of them probably has the most to do in shaping Tom’s human condition. Tom’s father’s absence is the cause of his mother’s escapes into her better, more glorious past. It also created Laura’s dependence on her glass menagerie and her father’s records which in turn creates Tom’s need to protect. In the end, Tom’s personal ambitions, his internal force won against the external force of all those around him which proves that his internal forces shaped his human condition more than his external forces.

In comparing all three protagonists from “the Glass Menagerie”, “The Sandman: Season of Mists” and “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”, the common thread every text is that the human condition is determined by internal forces rather than external forces. Though this is true in varying degrees as Tom is a young man, Prufrock is someone near the end of his prime and Dream is a shapeless entity who does not age and does not change.

B: For me, the pieces of architecture that I consider most beautiful are the ones that interact with light creatively. Hence the Church of Light (Ibaraki Kasugaoka Kyokai Church) built by Tadao Ando is one of my favourite pieces of architecture.

I love the fact that the space of the chapel is defined by light, by the strong contrast between light and shade. Oh, and that artificial lighting and an altar isn't needed. What was interesting was that the construction of this church ran over budget and for a while the architect considered doing away with the roof. This problem was solved by the construction company donating the cost of the roof.

C: Call me a glutton, but I love good food (though doesn't everybody?). Some might say that its rather sad to have a picture of food as my 'something beautiful' but coming from someone who has been working in cafes and catering for some years, a beautifully presented tray of food is really rare and take a lot of effort.

This was taken in QVB's tea room where I went with some friends to have what we thought was high tea. It turns out that 'high tea' is actually what the lower class had in Victorian England as they combine lunch and dinner to make one meal to cut down on costs. What we had was 'afternoon tea' which was a higher class custom as they have a long gap (nearly 10hrs!) between lunch and dinner.

STEP 4:

FIONA HALL

artifice, wilting, vivid.

TRACY MOFFAT

tragedy, yearning, desperate.

ROSALIE GASCOIGNE

deer, standing, fixed
